Changing Your Address in Sweden When You Move

To change your address in Sweden you file a free move notification, a flyttanmälan, with Skatteverket, no later than one week after you move. That updates your officially registered address and passes it to most government agencies automatically. Everything commercial, from your bank to your electricity contract, you still have to update yourself.

How to register your new address with Skatteverket

  1. Go to Skatteverket's flyttanmälan
  2. Log in with BankID, or request a paper form if you do not have one yet
  3. Enter your new address and move-in date
  4. Include everyone in the household who is moving; a guardian files for children under 18

It is free, and you can file from about a month before your move-in date. Filing in advance is the simplest option once the date is fixed.

What updates automatically, and what does not

This is the single most common misunderstanding for newcomers.

Short version: authorities get it, companies do not.

Flyttanmälan or mail forwarding?

These two are constantly confused, and they do different things.

  • Flyttanmälan with Skatteverket changes your registered address. Free, and required.
  • Mail forwarding (eftersändning) via Svensk Adressändring redirects post still addressed to your old home. Paid, and optional.

Forwarding is worth it for the first six months, because there is always a sender you forgot. It does not replace the flyttanmälan, you need both.

Using a c/o address

If you sublet, share a flat, or your name is not on the door and the mailbox, you need a c/o address. Enter the c/o name in the flyttanmälan form.

Without it, post is often returned to sender, because Swedish postal delivery matches the name on the mailbox rather than just the street address. For newcomers in sublets this is the most common reason official letters never arrive, and those letters matter: your personnummer decision, tax statements and healthcare correspondence all come by post.

Utilities and contracts you have to move

  • Electricity. Cancel the old contract and sign a new one for the new address. Read the meter on moving day and photograph it, that is your protection against a wrong final bill. If you sign nothing you are assigned a default contract, which is almost always more expensive.
  • Broadband and TV. Check your provider serves the new address; in some buildings the choice is locked to one network. Notice periods run one to three months.
  • Home insurance. Update before move-in, see below.
  • Alarm, parking permit and storage, all usually tied to the address
  • Bank and credit cards. They do not receive your address from the population register.
  • Employer, for payslips and insurance
  • Healthcare centre, especially if you change region

Notice periods

ContractTypical notice
Rental flat (hyresrätt)3 calendar months
Electricity1 month, longer if fixed-term
Broadband1–3 months
Home insuranceTransfer rather than cancel

For a rental, notice runs from the end of the month after you give it. Give notice on 5 March and the contract runs to 30 June. Always check your own lease, and give notice in writing.

You do not give notice on an owned apartment (bostadsrätt) or a house. There, the handover date in the sale contract governs.

Home insurance

Update the address before you move in so your belongings are covered at the new home from day one. Two things worth knowing:

  • The premium can change, since it depends on area, home type and size
  • Cover during the move itself is often limited. The moving company's liability insurance is what applies to the transport (informationsverige.se)

If your old and new homes overlap for a period, ask your insurer how they handle covering both.

Special cases

Moving in together? Each adult files their own flyttanmälan, even to the same address.

Subletting? You should still register at the address if you live there for more than a year. Make sure the sublet is approved by the landlord or the housing association.

Moving abroad? File a notice of emigration with Skatteverket instead. Different form, different rules.

Only have a samordningsnummer? You are not in the population register, so the automatic address sharing does not apply. Contact each authority directly.
