A kitchen renovation can be anything from new doors for 25,000 SEK to a complete new kitchen with a changed layout for over 300,000. What determines the price is rarely the material choice, but whether the sink, hob and appliances move. The labour cost earns a 30 percent ROT deduction if you own the home.
What it costs
2026 estimates, including materials:
| Scope | Approximate cost |
|---|---|
| New doors, worktop and handles | 25,000–60,000 SEK |
| New kitchen, existing layout | 120,000–250,000 SEK |
| New kitchen, changed layout | 200,000–400,000 SEK+ |
For a full new kitchen, roughly 40 percent goes to labour and 60 percent to materials, because carcasses, doors, worktops and appliances weigh heavily. That matters for the ROT deduction, which applies only to the labour portion.
Is replacing just the doors enough?
Often, and it is the most overlooked saving in the whole project.
If the carcasses are sound and the layout works, new doors, a new worktop and new handles give an almost-new impression for a fraction of the cost. Add a new tap and under-cabinet lighting and the difference is greater still.
Replace the whole kitchen when:
- The carcasses are water-damaged or breaking down
- The layout does not work
- You want to move appliances or the sink
- The dimensions are non-standard and doors are no longer available
What a kitchen renovation includes
- Demolition and removal of the old fittings
- Electrical: new sockets, lighting, connecting appliances
- Plumbing: sink, tap, connecting the dishwasher
- Any relocation of water and drainage
- Carpentry: fitting carcasses, doors, worktop and trim
- Tiling or splashback behind the counter
- Painting and flooring, often as extras
Timeline
| Week | Stage |
|---|---|
| 1 | Demolition, waste removal, first fix electrical and plumbing |
| 1–2 | Wall work, filling, new flooring if included |
| 2–3 | Fitting carcasses, doors and worktop |
| 3 | Connecting appliances, sink and lighting |
| 3–4 | Splashback, trim, painting, adjustments |
A standard kitchen takes two to four weeks, a door replacement a few days. Expect to be without a kitchen for most of that time. Setting up a temporary kitchenette elsewhere with a microwave, kettle and fridge makes a real difference.
Order the kitchen well in advance. Lead times on carcasses and worktops, especially made-to-measure stone, are often several weeks and dictate when work can start.
Electrical and plumbing need a certified firm
A carpenter can fit the kitchen but may not connect electricity or water.
- Fixed electrical work requires a company registered with Elsäkerhetsverket
- Water and drainage must follow the industry rules, see Säker Vatten
Ask who the main contractor is and who coordinates the different trades. This is the most common reason kitchen projects overrun: the electrician cannot come until the carpenter has finished, and the carpenter cannot continue until the wiring is in.
If the sink or dishwasher moves, new water and drainage runs are needed, and in an apartment that can be limited by where the risers sit.
ROT for a kitchen renovation
ROT is 30 percent of the labour cost in 2026, up to 50,000 SEK per person per year (Skatteverket).
Worked example for a new kitchen:
| Line | Amount |
|---|---|
| Labour: demolition, carpentry, electrical, plumbing | 70,000 SEK |
| ROT deduction, 30% of labour | −21,000 SEK |
| Materials: carcasses, doors, worktop, appliances | 105,000 SEK |
| Total to pay | 154,000 SEK |
Note that materials are the majority of a kitchen bill, and none of it earns a deduction. Insist the quote itemises labour and materials from the start.
If two of you own the home, split the invoice and use both ceilings. See the ROT deduction.
If you own a bostadsrätt
Check the association's rules and ask the board before starting, particularly if you plan to:
- Move water or drainage
- Touch load-bearing walls
- Change ventilation or how the extractor connects
Connecting an extractor fan to the building's ventilation is specifically regulated in many associations, because a motorised fan can upset the balance of the whole system.
Common questions
What does a kitchen renovation cost?
Doors and worktop 25,000 to 60,000 SEK, a new kitchen in the existing layout 120,000 to 250,000, and with a changed layout 200,000 to 400,000 SEK or more (2026 estimates).
What drives the price most?
Whether the layout changes. Moving the sink, hob or appliances requires new electrical and plumbing.
Is replacing just the doors enough?
Often yes, if the carcasses are sound and the layout works.
How long does a kitchen renovation take?
