Book in October, not January
This is the one point that genuinely affects what you pay.
Snow clearing firms sign season contracts in advance and prioritise contract customers when it snows. Anyone calling after a snowfall joins the back of a queue, at precisely the moment everyone else is calling too. After a serious snowfall the wait can run to several days.
A contract signed in October is also usually cheaper per visit than an emergency call-out in January.

Roof clearing costs most because it is work at height with safety equipment, and the price depends on the pitch, height and access of the roof.

Read carefully at what snow depth they turn out, often five or ten centimetres, and how quickly after the snowfall. A contract that does not say is hard to hold anyone to.
The property owner's liability
This is the part that costs most to be unaware of.
You are liable for snow and ice falling from your roof. If a person, a car or a neighbour's fence is damaged, that is your responsibility as the property owner. It applies whether or not you knew about the risk, and home insurance does not necessarily cover the consequences of neglected maintenance.
In many municipalities the property owner is also responsible for keeping the pavement outside the plot free of snow and ice. The rules differ between municipalities, so check what applies where you live.
In practice:
- Look up after every snowfall and thaw. Icicles form when snow melts on a warm roof and refreezes at the eaves.
- Cordon off the ground under an edge with icicles until they are gone.
- Do not wait for it to melt on its own. It will, but rarely when convenient.
RUT for snow clearing
RUT-eligible at 50 percent of the labour cost (Skatteverket):
- Clearing snow from driveways, yards, and house and garage roofs
- Removing icicles
- Clearing, gritting and salting pavements, where the municipality requires the property owner to keep them clear
Does not qualify:
- Shared surfaces and buildings in a samfällighet, a joint property association, such as a shared garage block
- Tools and machinery, such as tractors and loaders. Only the labour time counts.
The work must be done in or close to the home, payment must be electronic, and the person doing the work must not be related to you.
If you live in a bostadsrätt or a rented flat, the roof and yard are normally the association's or landlord's responsibility. They order and pay, and you get no deduction of your own. More in the RUT deduction.
Before you sign
- Ask at what snow depth they turn out and within how many hours
- Check what is included: just the driveway, or also the path to the door, the steps and the pavement?
- Ask whether gritting and salting are included or billed separately
- Check the company holds approved F-skatt, or the deduction is lost
- Ask what the insurance covers if paving, a fence or a car is damaged
- Ask for the labour cost on its own line on the invoice
