Leaf Removal in Stockholm: Cost, Timing and RUT

Leaf clearing costs roughly 500 to 800 SEK per hour before the RUT deduction (2026 guide figures), so about 250 to 400 after it. The raking qualifies for RUT; hauling the leaves away does not. That split decides what you actually pay.

What it costs

Before RUTAfter RUT
Hourly rate, one gardener500–800 SEK250–400 SEK
Small garden or courtyard, 1–2 h500–1,600 SEK250–800 SEK
Normal detached garden, 3–6 h1,500–4,800 SEK750–2,400 SEK
Large garden, many trees, 6–10 h3,000–8,000 SEK1,500–4,000 SEK
Waste removal per trailer or sack500–1,500 SEKno deduction

These are guide figures, not quotes. The time depends mostly on how many deciduous trees stand on the plot, not on the size of the garden. A small plot under two large maples takes longer than a big plot with nothing but grass.

How the deduction works out

RUT is 50 percent of the labour cost (Skatteverket), and it covers work carried out on the plot where you live.

Worked example for a detached garden:

ItemAmount
Labour, 4 h × 650 SEK2,600 SEK
RUT deduction, 50 percent−1,300 SEK
Waste removal, one trailer (no deduction)800 SEK
To pay2,100 SEK

Note that the waste removal is a quarter of the bill and earns nothing at all.

Why the removal specifically does not count

Skatteverket approves gathering garden waste ready for removal, but not hauling it away. The line runs at the edge of your plot: work in the garden is RUT-eligible, transport away from it is not.

Two ways to keep that part down:

  • Drive it yourself. Most municipalities accept garden waste from private households at the local recycling centre, the återvinningscentral, usually free of charge.
  • Compost on site. Composting and gathering both count as garden work and qualify.

Always ask for labour and waste removal on separate lines on the invoice. Bundled together, the whole item can fall outside the deduction.

Rake, blower or vacuum?

Best forDrawback
RakeBeds, small areas, around plantsSlow over large areas
BlowerLarge lawns, paths, deckingNoisy, raises dust, poor when wet
VacuumWhen leaves are shredded and reusedSlower, heavier to carry

Wet leaves cannot be blown. In a rainy autumn a rake or vacuum is the only option, and the hours go up.

Many municipalities and housing associations restrict when noisy equipment may be used, typically early mornings and Sundays. Ask whether the company knows the rules for your area.

How often, and when?

Expect two passes in a normal autumn:

  1. Early to mid October, once the first leaves are down
  2. Late October to mid November, when the trees are bare

A single late pass means the first leaves have sat for six weeks, gone wet, packed down and already started damaging the grass beneath.

Check the gutters during the second pass, once the trees are empty. Note though that cleaning roofs and gutters is not RUT but ROT, and only for detached houses. See gutter cleaning.

What leaves do if left

  • On the lawn: the grass is smothered and rots, giving yellow patches and moss by spring
  • On paving and steps: wet leaves become slippery and stain stone
  • In gutters: blockages, overflow and a risk of damp damage to the facade
  • In beds: here they do good, as winter cover and insect shelter

That last point is worth repeating: leaves in beds should stay. They protect roots from frost and shelter insects over winter.

What else to book at the same time

Since the minimum charge and call-out fee apply anyway, it is worth collecting several jobs into one visit:

  • The final mow and autumn feed
  • Hedge cutting, which is RUT-eligible and usually priced per metre
  • Weeding and moss treatment
  • Whatever pruning should be done now

See the autumn garden cleanup for the full list and autumn pruning for what to cut when.

Common questions

What does leaf removal cost?

Around 500 to 800 SEK per hour before RUT as a 2026 guide figure, so roughly 250 to 400 after. A detached garden takes three to six hours.

Does leaf clearing qualify for RUT?

Yes, 50 percent of the labour (Skatteverket). The removal does not.

Why does the waste removal not qualify?

Gathering the waste is garden work, but driving it away is transport and falls outside RUT.

How often do the leaves need clearing?

Usually twice, once in mid October and once when the trees are bare.

Rake, blower or vacuum?

Rake in beds, blower on large dry areas, vacuum when the leaves are shredded and reused.

What happens if leaves stay on the lawn?

The grass is smothered, giving yellow patches and moss by spring. In beds, leaves do good instead.
